What is the Goal of ESIC
The Employees’ State Insurance (ESI) Scheme is a part of the Employees’ State Insurance Act. When disaster strikes, this protection has got workers’ backs – whether it’s a serious illness, having a baby, getting hurt on the job, or tragically, losing their life. On top of serving insured employees, medical care is also available to their family members. The ESI Scheme covers factories and other workplaces like road transport services, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, newspapers, shops, and educational or medical institutions with 10 or more workers. However, in some states, the threshold for coverage is still 20 workers. Employees in these workplaces who earn up to Rs. 15,000 per month are eligible for social security benefits under the ESI Act.
ESI Corporation has set up 151 hospitals and 42 hospital annexes for inpatient services. They provide primary and outpatient medical services through a network of about 1,418 ESI dispensaries, 140 AYUSH units, and 1,017 panel clinics, etc.
Keeping up with industrialization, the Scheme is now implemented in over 830 centers across 31 States and Union Territories. The numbers are staggering: 723,000 factories and establishments are covered under the Act, resulting in benefits for a whopping 20.3 million insured individuals and their loved ones. Currently, the total number of beneficiaries is over 78.9 million.
Benefits under ESI Scheme
The main benefits provided under the ESI Scheme are:
- Sickness Benefit
- Disablement Benefit
- Dependants’ Benefit

Other benefits include expenses for confinement and funerals, vocational and physical rehabilitation, unemployment allowance (RGSKY), and training for skill improvement.
